Ocean Hour Farm

Improving ocean health through regenerative land stewardship.

OPPORTUNITY

Ocean Hour Farm is a regenerative farm in Rhode Island dedicated to improving ocean health through regenerative agriculture and permaculture design. As their programs expanded, they came to us with a vision: transform their static PDF maps and permaculture workbook into a digital tool that could both educate and document the farm’s ongoing evolution. They needed a central hub to store internal data, highlight the layout of the land, and showcase the plants, animals, and systems that bring the farm to life—all while making complex information clear and accessible. The result is an interactive map experience that invites users to explore the farm and understand the vital connection between healthy land and a thriving ocean.

APPROACH

We designed and developed an interactive map that allowed the user to explore the farm in a way that feels delightful and informative. Built to invite exploration, the map allows users to click on different land units and learn about various aspects of the farm such as permaculture methods, and explanations of how each system supports soil, water, and ocean health. The result is an easy to use educational digital experience that reflects the farm’s values and serves to inspire the local agriculture community to learn about the benefits of regenerative agriculture.

The first step was to translate the farm’s analog maps, technical drawings, and permaculture design notes into a single illustrated map that captured the feel of the natural landscape while clearly outlining the farm’s land units and design systems.

Exploring Design systems

Each land unit on the farm had its own set of data, images, and graphics—unique content that needed to be displayed clearly without overwhelming the user. This required a thoughtful interface that balanced simplicity with depth, and worked seamlessly across both mobile and desktop. Our solution was to create custom overlays for each land unit, allowing users to explore the farm without losing their sense of place. On mobile, “Farm View” and “Story View” buttons let users easily toggle between visual content and written information, creating a smooth, intuitive experience across devices.

An educational tool

The interactive map invites users to explore the farm’s plants, animals, water systems, and soil—revealing how each element works together within a regenerative agriculture system. Designed as both an educational tool and a living archive, the map documents the farm’s evolution over time. Looking ahead, it also serves a larger purpose: to inspire others to adopt regenerative practices and contribute to a more sustainable future.
